On Thursday at the U.S. Open, top-ranked Ana Ivanovic was sent reeling out of the tournament in the second round. In losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to Julie Coin — an obscure, 188th-ranked Frenchwoman — Ivanovic never looked the part of the queen of her sport.Ivanovic gained the No. 1 ranking by capturing her first Grand Slam at the French Open. At 21, she looked oh-so-grand, oh-so-powerful, oh-so-ready to take over the tour. But Ivanovic's balloon has been popped in a very big way. A bad thumb injury she suffered after an early-round exit at Wimbledon wouldn't allow her to pick up a racquet until 10 days ago. On Thursday, she couldn't keep an important ball in the court. Her fierce forehand — the most feared shot of the first part of the year — was a wreck. Without it she was forced to scramble around attempting shots that she doesn't own yet.All credit to Coin, whose gutsy play was well above her ranking, but Ivanovic's performance was arguably her worst in a couple of years."Obviously if you would ask me at the moment if I'm playing like No. 1 probably not, but I can't judge too much on that because I really haven't had chance to practice," Ivanovic said. "This kind of loss I had today is just incentive to work harder, to go back on the court and to keep working hard and practicing and improving."Ivanovic is nearly guaranteed to lose her top spot. Four other players have a chance to overtake her: countrywoman and world No. 2 Jelena Jankovic by reaching the semifinals; No. 4 Serena Williams by reaching the semis; and No. 5 Elena Dementieva and No. 6 Dinara Safina by reaching the finals. At least one of those scenarios almost certainly will occur, but it doesn't really matter, because Ivanovic has a much bigger problem — namely, to rediscover her rhythm, which was lost on Thursday in a cacophony of screaming Coin winners."I thought I can slowly get into the match, and she played completely different than I expected," Ivanovic said. "She was serving extremely well and hitting very powerful shots. So I really struggled and made too many unforced errors and my serve was not working really well. ... In the third set I created a lot of opportunities for myself. Just didn't quite use them. That was very, very frustrating."Ivanovic repeatedly looked at her box during the match, her eyes pleading with her coach, Sven Groenefeld, to inject her game with some sanity. She couldn't believe she was spraying balls, and her pre-match thoughts of being able to ease her way into the tournament were disappearing."Maybe I was a little bit also too hard on myself at some moments," she said. The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour is a long way from its much-heralded Glam Slam Australian final between the striking brunette Ivanovic and the equally attractive blonde Maria Sharapova, which was won by the Russian. Once again the tour is being led by the walking wounded, or not at all.Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, is out for possibly the rest of the year with a rotator-cuff tear. Jankovic sustained a knee injury at Wimbledon that she just can't seem to shake mentally. Every match since then she's complained about being out of shape and unable to impose her relentless game. That's too bad, because a happy Jankovic is a funny, delightful crowd-pleaser, but a miserable Jankovic is something else entirely.I play wow in 3 years.and i know some
