I had a Rainbow demonstration a few months ago. i was highly impressed but didnt have $1800 to purchase a vacuum. Now I have a sales person coming over to show me a kirby. (my cousin keeps sending them my way so she gets free stuff). Two questions... One. If I do decide down the road to buy one, which is a better vacuum for the price? Two. If I know that I am not going to purchase one anytime soon.. should I have just told them not to come or let them come do there thing (it helps my cousin!)? and they offered to shampoo a carpet for free and my living room does need it!!

I've used rainbow vacuums for many years. they work great at picking up dirt, but not ALL the dirt out of the carpet. That pretty much sums these things up. The pros to a rainbow are: no odor, no bags, easier to do furniture and bare floors on the fly because the hose is there. The kirby pulls all the dirt out of the carpet because the carpet nozzle is sucked to the floor all the time. It's an upright and it's heavy. It doesn't like throw rugs. And it's a pain to have to change a bunch of things just to use a hose. It will have an odor to it too, however, it does contain dust very well. I hope this was helpful. I use a panasonic canister these days with a power head. The kirby is sitting in the closet.

A friend of mine has a Rainbow, and since the water holds all the dust, it's a bit better if you have allergies. I've never heard any complaints from her about it.

Though I don't know if Rainbows have any attachments with rotating brushrolls. Robert_smith395 is right about how the Kirby pulls the dirt out from deep in the carpet. Having a brushroll helps a ton. Though I've found that since Kirbys have so much suction, they don't work very well on throw rugs. The hose with the small upholstery attachment works great, and also a Kirby Turbo Brush/Zipp Brush works wonders on pet hair, and would probably work good on throw rugs.

However I do disagree with one thing; IMHO it's not a pain to change to the hose, since all you do is lift the light hood, turn the belt lifter and the latch, then put the hose on and relatch it. I can do it in under 15 seconds, and it's never a pain. Though that's just my humble opinion.

Personally though, instead of buying the new Kirby, I'd look for a used one, or a refurbished older model. Another friend of mine bought a refurbished Classic III model for $300, and it was rebuilt, polished up and ready to go. It has a cloth bag, but you can easily convert one over to the HEPA bag setup. I've seen the conversion kits for around $100, and they include everything you need.
