cheaper brand vacuum? Can't afford a new Electrolux. If I spend $100+ on repairing, after 20 years, how long would it last? If I did buy a new one, what brand would anyone recommend? They all seem so plasticy! Also, bags or bagless??? Any suggestions?

Anything you buy now is cheaper then what you paid 20 years ago.Buy anything you want, but stay away from the Dirt Devil brands. They are crap.Hoovers are good. But, pretty much anything is good now-a-days.

You will not get 20 years of use out of a cheaper vacuum. Your upright can be repaired, but depending on what is wrong you might be better off buy a new one. The new Aerus-Electrolux upright comes with a 10 year warranty.

I would say that it depends on how satisfied you are with it as an appliance.
My Electrolux canister is over fifty years old and serviced once only--just recently for bearing repacing and new carbon brushes and hose. My other Electrolux is considerably newer (about 1990) and it has not near the suction of the old one which is why I had the old one refurbished. You might take into consideration this: I think that the older pre-1970 Electrolux vacuums and their power nozells are much more reliable and better performers. There are a lot of vacuum repair people who can help you find and maintain one. If you prefer uprights and you like your present machine, I would find a good repair person in the yellow pages and go for it. Also, if you like uprights, a good rebuilt Kirby, (again, and older model) or a rejuvenated old stlyle hoover convertabel or Eureka with old fashion bag would be a very good option. I like my old Electrolux for the floors and dusting and an old Kirby for the carpets.
I hope this helps.

Wink Re: Vacuums;my 20 yr old upright Electrolux broke. Should I fix it or by a new, but

The internet is a great place to shop for these sort of vacuums that were made before planned obsolcence was ruled into manufacturing. In fact, there are a host of consumers who buy ONLY those appliances that were made before gimmicry replaced good quality manufacturing. The Electrolux model L is the last really good E-lux cannister I think anyway. The 1205, and the models sold as premium models in subsequent years have a lot of bells and whistles and are clunky and akward, and prone to burnout. The traditional Electrolux, hoover, Kirby, Eureka, ect. made before the late sixties or seventies really do earn the privilige of being called dependable appliances. I am afraid that the newer name brand machines are a far cry from the machines of old. I have worked for Electrolux, Kirby, and in appliance repair on the side---and I have been amazed at how much better a less expensive or older model can be than a newer "delux" model.
Hope this helps.
