Lately, I've been putting it on the right setting, and it's been working, but not as well as it should be. My roommate claims it's the belt, so is it possible for it to be the belt, when it now picks up 35% more than it did (picked up basically nothing before) because I put it on the correct setting. Which model do you have?

Make sure there are no clogs in the hoses, and make sure the bag isn't full. It could very well be the belt, though. Does it have good suction if you unhook the hose and check it at the hose end? If it does, then it could be the belt. If not, then it's most likely a clog somewhere, or an overfull bag (which could also lead to a clog).

Try looking for a tag on the back or underside of the unit. It will probably say "BISSEL", where it was made, etc., and it should say what belt it uses. I have a Bissel Powerforce bagged model, and it uses Style 7 bags, belts and filters. If you can't find out that way, try checking the phone book for vacuum cleaner shops, and ask them what belt yours would need.

here are my reccomendations on what you should try.

1. inspect for any clogs, and remove them
2. replace the belt, and clean any and all hair, strings, or whatever objects tangled around the brush
3. wash out filters, if they can be washed, or replace the filters.
